Dos Santos was born into severe poverty and he was raised by a single mother and by the time he was 10 years old, he was doing odd jobs to make ends meet for his family. He began training for a career in Mixed Martial Arts, beginning with Brazilian jiu-jitsu in his late teens and by the time he was 21 years old, he was signed on his first professional contract. Junior dos Santos fought for several independent promotions in Brazil, including Extreme Fighting Championship, Mo Team League and Demo Fight.

He was soon signed by the UFC and he made his debut with the promotion at UFC 90 in 2008. He went on to win his first seven matches in the promotion, a run that earned him a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship. He defeated the champion Cain Velasquez in just 64 seconds, winning the match via technical knockout to become the UFC Heavyweight champion.

However, after just one defense of his title, Junior dos Santos suffered a shock defeat at the hands of Velasquez at UFC 155 and lost the coveted title. He was supposed to face Alistair Overeem at UFC 160 but after he stepped down from the match, he is scheduled to take on Mark Hunt.

The UFC also duly obliged and handed Cigano a chance at getting even with the hard hitting Dutchman inside the Octagon, scheduling a match between the two at UFC 160 on the 25^th of May. But fate was to intervene yet again as Overeem pulled out of their match, leaving Junior dos Santos to take on Mark Hunt on the same fight card, as he looks to get back into contention for a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship.

And although initially it seemed that the Brazilian would be disappointed by the change in match schedule, a recent interview with MMAFightCorner.com revealed the Dutchman is not on the mind of the Brazilian. Cigano made it quite clear that he doesn’t have anything to say about Overeem, adding that he pulled out of yet another fight against him and so, he shouldn’t comment on the matter anymore.

He turned his attention on Mark Hunt stating that the only one on his mind right now is Hunt. Junior dos Santos added that he knows it is going to be a very tough match and he will have to win it in order to get back in contention for a shot at the coveted UFC Heavyweight Championship that he lost.

It was almost ironical to see the Brazilian being dominated by Velasquez for the better part of 25 minutes when it was he who had completely decimated the Cuban American back in 2011 to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship, when he defeated him after just 64 seconds courtesy of a total knock out. And immediately after the loss suffered by Alistair Overeem, Junior dos Santos took to Twitter and called for match number three between him and the reigning champion.

Moreover, what was even more impressive was the fact that the post made its way to Twitter barely minutes after the end of the match. With the UFC always ensuring that a defeated person in any championship gets a rematch, it was only a matter of time before he got a chance to fight for the title, but maybe even he didn’t think that the opportunity would present itself so early.

Had Overeem won the match against Silva, he would have been penciled in for a UFC Heavyweight Championship match against Cain Velasquez, but after his loss, he will fall down the pecking order without a doubt. And now, Junior dos Santos is trying to seize the opportunity, adding that he was not mentally fit for the match against Velasquez in December and given a chance, he will show what he is about.

The Brazilian suffered a unanimous decision after five brutal rounds during which Cain Velasquez battered him on the mat, losing his title. But Shogun has admitted that it was his own fault that cost him the match, admitting that he was so obsessed with the brutal take downs of Velasquez and trying to avoid it that he failed to cover his face and that brought his own downfall. Junior dos Santos admitted that up until that point, Velasquez was failing to take him down in spite of his attempts.

Speaking to SporTV, the Brazilian admitted that the better man won on the night and he has no qualms about it. He added that Cain was the better fighter on the night and deserved top leave the Octagon with the title belt, but mentioned he was also at fault for making it so easy for him by using the wrong strategy.

Junior dos Santos also added that his failure to use jiu-jitsu while on the mat, for which he had trained for so long also helped the cause of the Cuban American. However, dos Santos mentioned that he was aware ho w strong Cain actually is on the ground and that is what came back to haunt him in the end of the match.
